The four of us join the clan around the large fire for the evening meal.

We eat heartily while some of our talented youth perform a tribal dance. When they finish, they trot off to eat their suppers while the adults pass around tankards of strong ale to cleanse our palettes.

“Shall we begin the marriage ritual?” one of the elders finally asks. In response, I stand up and say, “One sun sets and a new one rises.”

We proceed to the mountain, and the elder who spoke first conducts the ritual. He ties knots made of various swaths of silk around each of our hands, connecting each of ours to Ember’s. When the ritual concludes, I take Ember’s hand in mine before pulling her close.

“Can I kiss you?” I whisper.

She simply nods, so I pull her even closer, then I kiss her passionately for all to see, prompting enthusiastic whoops and applause. Although our marriage may be false, a harsh punishment would result if we fail to convince our clan it’s real.

When I release her, she’s blushing madly and drops the line of her eyes to the floor.

“I believe it’s my turn,” Vaughn says as he steps forward and Ember turns to face him. She swallows hard and I can see she’s nervous—proof is in her fidgeting hands and the blush pinkening her cheeks. She simply nods up at Vaughn and he responds by lifting her off her feet as he plants a deep kiss on her lips. She wraps her arms around him and furthers the kiss and I suddenly feel as if the one the two of us shared pales in comparison. It just… had none of the vigor this one does.

Blake then steps up to Vaughn and taps him on the shoulder, causing the bigger man to disengage from Ember and step back. Yet, his eyes are on her the entire time and I can see by his breeches that he’s hard. He wants her just as much as I want her—just as much as all three of us want her. Well, Sinbad too, for that matter. I’ve seen his own expressions of longing.

Blake approaches Ember and they both just stand there for a moment. Then he reaches out and takes her hand, bending low as he brings it to his lips. I hope he doesn’t think this will suffice as a nuptial kiss. Seconds later, he stands up and whispers something in her ear, no doubt asking for her consent, and she nods. Moments later, he’s whisked her into his arms and his lips are on hers. The kiss is shorter than either Vaughn’s or mine. But that matters not for we’ve accomplished what the clan wanted us to. We’re married. All four of us.

Ember pauses and then smiles at my elders, who watch, stone-faced and seemingly unimpressed. I warned her such might be the case.

“Now, if you’ll all excuse us, we’ll continue our affection in private,” Vaughn tells them as Ember’s cheeks grow an even darker shade of red.
